After running a high-speed rail campaign, many brand owners say the same thing: "I feel like it worked."

"Feeling" is useless. High-speed rail ads aren't Douyin. You can't directly watch plays, clicks, and conversions. But that doesn't mean you can't measure them. If you design the evaluation before you spend, you can still settle the account.

Measurement works on three layers: exposure, behavior, and awareness.

1. Exposure layer: first figure out how many people saw it

Exposure for high-speed rail ads can be estimated from official passenger flow.

Yulin North Station currently handles around five to six thousand passengers a day. After entering, travelers stay 30 to 40 minutes. If an LED screen covers the whole waiting hall and we apply an 80% visibility factor, it actually reaches roughly 4,000 to 5,000 people a day. A lightbox in an entry corridor might only have a 30% to 50% visibility factor, because some people walk fast or stare at their phones.

Wide view of Yulin North Station waiting hall▲ Wide view of Yulin North Station's waiting hall. Don't trust a verbal impression count; calculate it from passenger flow and the visibility factor of the exact spot.

Don't trust a publisher's offhand claim of "tens of thousands see it every day." Ask for official passenger numbers and the visibility factor for that exact spot, then calculate it yourself. Visibility differs a lot by location: the seating area is highest, corridor sides are next, and exit areas are lower.

2. Behavior layer: see if travelers moved

Exposure is only step one. The key is whether the ad made travelers act.

The simplest and most effective method: put a unique QR code on the creative. Scans are directly trackable. For store-oriented brands, the QR code can lead to a coupon page or store navigation page. Compare scan volume during the campaign to the period before, and the change is clear.

Wall billboard above ticket gates▲ Wall billboard above the ticket gates. A unique QR code turns the ad into directly trackable behavior data.

Even without a QR code, you can look at local brand search volume, map navigation requests to the store, website visits, and 400 hotline calls. Pull these numbers by week and compare them to the campaign period. If searches rise during the run, the ad is at least making people remember you.

More directly: count store foot traffic. Ask the store manager to record daily visitors and compare with the month before. If the ad pushes an in-store offer, traffic change is the most direct answer.

Live ad inside the station▲ A live ad inside the station. Evaluate exposure, behavior, and awareness as separate layers.

3. Awareness layer: see if the brand was remembered

Awareness is the hardest to quantify, but it's not impossible.

The easiest way: run a small phone survey or online questionnaire in the target area. Ask two questions: when you think of this product category, which brand comes to mind first? Have you seen a certain brand at the high-speed rail station in the last month?

Test once before the campaign and once after. See if prompted brand awareness and ad recall improve. This suits clients with enough budget and a long-term brand-building goal. You don't need a huge sample; 200 to 300 responses are enough. The key is to test the same area or group before and after.

4. Don't give the high-speed rail ad all the credit or blame

Many owners make the same mistake: sales go up, it's all because of the rail ad; sales go down, the ad is useless.

Sales change comes from many factors. Was there a promotion at the same time? Online spend? Seasonal peak? Weather? Strip those out, and the remaining lift is closer to the real contribution of the rail ad.

A better approach is multi-touch attribution. Treat the rail ad as the brand-exposure touchpoint, online ads as the harvest touchpoint, and the physical store as the conversion touchpoint. Each plays a different role.

5. How do you make results more trackable?

Before launching, decide three things: what's the goal? How will you measure it? Where will the data come from?

If the goal is investment promotion, count inquiries and business cards exchanged during the event period. If the goal is product sales, count QR scans and store traffic. If the goal is brand awareness, count search index and survey results.

Station passage billboard▲ Station passage billboard. Different positions serve different jobs; match each one to a concrete behavior metric.

Where does the data come from? Search index from Baidu Index and WeChat Index. Store traffic from in-store counts or POS. QR scans from the link backend. Phone inquiries from the 400 backend or customer service records.

Write these into the contract. The publisher may not be able to give you final conversion numbers, but it should at least provide official passenger flow, live photos, and broadcast schedules. Add your own behavior data, and you can piece together the full picture.

The more detailed the data, the more valuable the review. Don't just ask "did it work?" Ask which audience, which site, and which time slot drove the result.

6. Don't get the evaluation window wrong

High-speed rail ad effects don't appear the day the ad goes live. Exposure happens immediately, but changes in search volume, store visits, and awareness usually take one to two weeks to show.

Extend the comparison window by two weeks before and after the campaign. The two weeks before are the baseline, the campaign period is the test, and the two weeks after capture residual effect. Don't conclude the moment the campaign ends, and don't judge from a single week.

Conclusion

Whether high-speed rail advertising worked can't be decided by gut feeling.

Exposure can be calculated. Behavior can be tracked. Awareness can be measured. The key is to design the evaluation before spending, not to make excuses after.

Before you hand over the money, figure out how you will prove it was well spent. After each campaign, write a one-page review: goals, data, conclusions. Reuse it next time.

That's the discipline professional brand owners should have.
