Station ads are crowded with training brands. Cooking schools, upgrade-to-bachelor programs, grad-school prep, civil-service exam prep, kids' coding. Logos sit at the entrance, the gate, the waiting hall, the most seen spots.
New Oriental Culinary went live across China's core stations in April 2023: Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao, Guangzhou South, Zhengzhou East, Chengdu East, a hundred cities, a thousand screens. They built a "Panda Chef" mascot and one line, "Learn to cook, New Oriental Culinary," so travelers hit it on the way in and out.
Qingdao North went further. ZhiBo and HaiNa, two upgrade-to-bachelor programs, took the totem light boxes by the gate: 3.21m tall, 1.75m wide, 4 banks of 30 screens wrapping a visual wall. The copy hits the exam-taker's fear: "You upgrade once, pick ZhiBo." The 8.18m by 3.08m wall box in the hall runs 65k-80k a month; HaiNa used it for "brand trust."
1. They are after the wait
Training brands chase stations not for the headcount but because people can't leave.
The waiting hall is a half-closed space. Travelers kill 30 to 60 minutes before the gate, phones get boring, eyes drift to the wall. A line like "you upgrade once" beats a feed post there. On an open street you walk past looking down; in the hall you look up and there is the screen.
The numbers back it. Among high-speed travelers, 18-40 year-olds are over 75%, with college degrees and above-average income more than ordinary outdoor media. That group is exactly the target for upgrade, grad, civil-service, and language prep. Parents with kids are the target for kids' enrichment and study-abroad agencies.
Wenzhou South measured it: in-station light boxes drew a 64.39% view rate, 47.24% looked closely, memory rate three times a feed push. The closed space blocks outside noise; nothing trees or buildings cover the ad, it sits on the path everyone walks.
2. The Yulin North crowd is worth it
The Nan-Yu section ran one year and moved 2.75 million trips. Yulin North now does 5,000-6,000 a day, Spring Festival peak hit 54,000 in a day. End of 2026 the Yu-Cen section opens, 2027 the full line reaches the Greater Bay Area, daily heads to 15,000-20,000.
In that flow, returning students, exam parents, young people off to study dominate. Guangxi is an exam-heavy province, hundreds of thousands of candidates a year plus grad and civil-service takers; Yulin North is close to a candidate hub. One local civil-service prep firm hung two weeks on the waiting-hall screen; half the scans came from returnees just off the train.
Yulin North's bundle holds 14 ad machines, 97 light boxes, 152 sqm LED, covering entrance, waiting, gate, exit. The play is layered interception: brand at the entrance, one line at the gate for the last glance, course points looping on the screen in the hall.
3. Do not treat the station like a feed post
The most wasteful buy: spend tens of thousands on a screen, the creative is one line of school name and a phone, same as a roadside rent sign. Station ads build a persona, not a notice.
New Oriental's line stuck because it was short, rhythmic, with a panda. The upgrade line spoke to fear of a wrong choice. Your copy should do the same: one claim, one strong visual, no word pile.
Do not bundle the whole line at once. Try one station for two weeks, see who scans in, then decide where to add. The three-station package beats single buys by 20-30%, but start small.
Creative must pass China Railway's compliance review before it goes up; absolute claims and "guaranteed pass" words fail. Clear it first, then produce, or you reprint and miss the slot.
4. Hang now, pay pre-opening rates
Yulin North prices on 5,000-6,000 now; after Yu-Cen opens and volume doubles, good spots fill and unit rates rise. Lianping's three-station bundle (HG2026-FW112) locks position now, cheaper than after opening.
Enrollment has seasons. Winter and summer breaks, grad-school sign-up, before the civil-service written exam, those are the windows. Go live two weeks ahead, you hit the candidate and parent at the decision moment. Miss it, wait next season.
If you want to test station enrollment, tell us your category and which station your audience is on; we plan one screen's schedule across the three stations.
